You can only solve a problem if it exists, but your busy mind creates a virtual problem and then it tries to take care of this phantom. How absurd!

How often should I check my blood glucose?

October 12th, 2011 by DoctorZaidi

If you are Type 2 diabetic, Ideally, you should test your blood glucose first thing in the morning and then about two hours after each meal. For many patients, this becomes cumbersome. Pricking your fingers several times a day is no fun. I tell my patients to rotate the timing of testing each day. For example, one day check it in the morning, the next day check it two hours after lunch and the third day, do it two hours after dinner.

The two hours post- meal blood glucose value is particularly important for the following reasons:

  • It has been shown to be closely linked to the risk for heart attack in several excellent medical studies.
  • It shows the impact of your food on your blood glucose. The two hours post-meal blood glucose value should be less than 140 mg/dl, preferably less than 120 mg/dl. A value more than 140 mg/dl indicates that you either ate too much or you ate the wrong food or a combination of these two factors. You should write down what you ate. Soon you will know what to eat and what to avoid. Share this diary with your doctor on each visit.

What Causes An Autoimmune Disease?

October 2nd, 2011 by DoctorZaidi

Autoimmune diseases include a wide range of diseases such as Type 1 diabetes, asthma, eczema, vitiligo, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Graves’ disease, lupus, M.S., rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, vitamin B 12 deficiency, Celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and adrenal insufficiency.

There are four major well known risk factors that contribute to any of the autoimmune diseases.

These are: genetics, food, vitamin D deficiency and stress.

While genetics obviously cannot be changed, the other three factors are treatable. And can make a huge difference in calming down the disease.

Your conditioned, busy mind is the root cause of your stress. You are not born with this. You acquire it from your society as you grow up.

Whatever your thoughts imply has either already happened or it may happen, but it is never happening at this moment in front of your eyes. In this way, thoughts distract you from Reality: the Reality of Now, and keep you trapped in the past and future and create a lot of stress for you.

How to raise HDL cholesterol?

September 14th, 2011 by DoctorZaidi

HDL cholesterol is also called the good cholesterol, because it cleans out the arteries, in comparison to LDL cholesterol, the bad cholesterol, which is found in the gunk built up in the arteries.

In my extensive 30 plus years experience as a physician, I have never seen a patient with high HDL cholesterol (more than 80 mg/dl) suffer from a heart attack or stroke. And I continue to see a number of patients with low LDL cholesterol suffer from heart attacks and stroke.

While the whole focus has been on lowering the LDL cholesterol, there has not been much attention on raising the HDL cholesterol. Why? Because almost every major pharmaceutical company has a blockbuster drug to lower the LDL cholesterol, but the drug industry have not found an effective way to raise the HDL cholesterol.

In my experience, drugs such as statins, niacin, fenofibrate and fish oil do not cause any significant increase in the HDL cholesterol.

What I have found really works is a simple change in your diet: Lower carbohydrates (including bread, pasta rice, cereals, oat meal, sugar, juices) and increase monounsaturated fats found in nuts, especially almonds, walnuts, pecan, macadamia and pistachios. Increasing the intake olive oil, avocados and fatty fish such as salmon also helps somewhat. Compared to popular belief, exercise does not help. One easy way to get plenty of almonds is thru my almond muffins.
